The UBC Physics and Astronomy Open House is being held on Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 4.

Thursday March 2 - Before the open house

• Arrival in Vancouver

• Informal meetings

• TRIUMF Colloquium at 2pm in TRIUMF Auditorium

• Physics Colloquium at 4pm in Hennings 201: See our graduate students compete in the physics and astronomy heat for the Three-Minute Thesis
  (Tea, coffee and cookies in lunchroom within Hennings 325 starting at 3:30pm)

• Two alternatives for Thursday evening:

  1. Tour of TRIUMF - Canada's Laboratory for  particle and nuclear physics 

     • Please indicate on the registration page if you are interested in this tour or the one on Saturday.

     • Translink Bus 49 goes from the UBC bus loop to TRIUMF Research Centre every 12 minutes.

     • Meet at 5:30pm at TRIUMF

  2.  UBC Physics & Astronomy Career Night 2023 at 5:30pm in Hennings 201

     • Please register for this event on EventBrite.

• Pub Night at the Gallery (top floor of student union, the Nest) starting at 7:30pm.

Friday 3 March - Morning

8:20 am - Arrival reception in Hennings 318 with continental breakfast

8:40 am - Welcome to the department from our graduate advisor, Gary Hinshaw

9:00 am - Stepping into the field: graduate research at UBC, a panel discussion with current graduate students and their advisors, facilitated by Alison Lister: 

Luke Reynolds and Carl Michal, Simone Hagey and Aaron Boley, Alan Knee and Jess McIver, Meng Xing (Ketty) Na and Andrea Damascelli

10:30 am - Coffee break 

10:45 am - Welcome to the department from our GSA president, Lara Bartels

11:00 am - Student life at UBC, a panel discussion with current graduate students, facilitated by Pedro Villalba González:

Shovon Biswas, Rachel Wang, Isabelle St-Martin, Ryohei (Rio) Weil

Friday 3 March - Afternoon

12 noon - Lunch, meet with UBC Physics & Astronomy faculty and students

1-5pm - Three live lab tours: 

1. Starting at QMI and ending at Hennings: Tour 1

2. Starting in Hennings and going to QMI: Tour 2

3. BC Cancer via bus (please sign up on registration form)

and meet with UBC researchers (see the Researcher Page for the schedule)

Friday March 3 - Evening

• Dinner at the Observatory

  • Meet at 5pm sharp in Hennings 318 to depart for the restaurant

  • The bus departs at 5:15 from the Chan Centre near the Rose Garden 

  • Dinner starts at 6pm at the Observatory.

• Bus returns leaves from the Observatory for the hotel (and UBC campus) at 9:30pm.
  
  

Saturday March 4 - Morning

• Two alternatives for Saturday morning:

  1. Tour of TRIUMF - Canada's Laboratory for  particle and nuclear physics (9:30am)

     • Please indicate on the registration page if you are interested in this tour or the one on Thursday.

     • Because of UBC Triathlon, from UBC Translink bus 25, 33, 49 or R4 goes to 16th and Wesbrook, then walk south on Wesbrook 10 min to TRIUMF Reception at 4004 Wesbrook Mall.

     • Meet at 9:30am at TRIUMF

  2.  The UBC Physics Olympics is in Hebb 100 from 9am to 4pm
     
     

Saturday March 4 - Afternoon

• Dim sum at the Golden Ocean in Kerrisdale at 1pm.  The party is under the name "Jeremy."

  • To go to the restaurant from TRIUMF, return to 16th and Wesbrook and take R4 bus.

  • From UBC take bus R4

  • From downtown take bus 16.

• Getting to the airport

  • From UBC: R4 to Canada Line 

  • From TRIUMF: R4 to Canada Line

  • From Dim Sum: 41 or R4 to Canada Line
